Meet Marco

Marco was on the wrong path. Although he had just turned 16, he was in the court system facing several substance abuse-related charges. He was also using substances daily. Marco’s probation officer was considering residential treatment if he wasn’t successful with Multidimensional Family Therapy.

Marco lived at home with his mother and two siblings. He had never met his father. His mom struggled to parent three children by herself. In the past, Marco and his mom participated in family therapy, both at home and through a day treatment program, but had little success.

To protect the identity of the people involved, we've changed names but not stories.

Marco and his mother took advantage of the supportive environment provided through MDFT to express themselves in a healthy way in order to better understand each other.

Marco and his mother took advantage of the supportive environment provided through MDFT to express themselves in a healthy way in order to better understand each other. Because of this new dialogue, Marco was able to reconnect with his mom in a meaningful way.

During this time Marco’s father reached out to him and together, they were able to meet and begin working through issues that contributed to Marco’s behavior. His father and mother also learned to co-parent effectively despite past issues and living hundreds of miles apart.

UPDATE: Marco has stopped using substances and continues to develop open, trusting relationships with both his mother and his father.
